Abby P. Metzger

When did you become a Co-op owner?
In 2008
What do you do in the community (e.g. work, volunteer, free time, etc.)?
I work at Oregon State University, where I am also a graduate student in the environmental sciences department. I have a few other identities like a pseudo gardener and quasi volunteer with the Corvallis Sustainability Coalition.
What is (are) your favorite Co-op product(s)?
Any local produce has a special place in my heart. Gala apples from La Mancha, mixed greens from Gathering Together Farms... yum. Coming in a close second is Pasta Plus spinach linguine. Top that off with some pesto and you have a very gorged-out Abby!
Why did you become an owner?
The food! I used to live with the Co-op's very own sample diva, Jenn Verdries, who fostered my love affair with First Alternative's bevy of delictible fares. My palate is so much better off because of her, although I still find kimchi foul in both taste and smell. But more than just excellent food, I became an owner because of the people - the farmers and growers who support this local enterprise, the dedicated localvores, the stockers, check-out clerks, customer service workers - everyone together makes the Co-op an enjoyable place to shop.
What is the greatest benefit to being an owner?
First, you get the smug satisfaction of being part of a socially and environmentally dedicated grocer. Second, you have the opportunity to help shape the Co-op's strategic vision. And third, you get totally sweet discounts and Co-op schwag, like a bumper sticker and re-usable bag. |
